Defend Nature through Recycling: Everything You Need to Know

Three Ways to Get Rid of a Junk Car

by Arnold Bowman

If you have a car that no longer works, you might be thinking of ways to get rid of it. If it isn't operating, you might not be able to sell it for what its worth, but that doesn't mean there aren't options for getting rid of it. Here are some different ways to get rid of a junk car.

Recycle the Car

Your first option for getting rid of a car that no longer runs is to recycle it. There are a variety of options to choosing this method. First of all, it allows you to help keep the planet greener by recycling different metal parts and components of the car. You can recycle the entire car at a local car recycling center, or pull the parts out yourself and take each of them to the appropriate recycling location. Also keep in mind that some places take glass from the windows, tires, and the seats to recycle. If you decide to recycle the entire car, it makes it easy to get rid of it, as they will often pick it up for you.

Donate It

If you don't want to recycle your car, you may want to donate it instead. Many charities and organizations take cars that are no longer working and either fix them up to give to people in need or sell the parts to fund their organization. Some organizations are open specifically for giving cars to families that don't have one, and have no way to get to work. They will take junkers that are donated to them, bring them to a mechanic to fix them up, then give them to these families who need them. You are not only doing a great service to your community, but you will have a receipt for your tax deductions as well.

Sell the Car

You have two ways to make money off your junker car, which include either selling it as-is or selling it for parts. If you want to just get rid of it quickly, you can attempt to sell the car as it is right now, regardless of the mechanical or body problems. You can list it in local or online advertisements, or attempt to sell it to a junk car buyer. These buyers often either sell the parts themselves or work on the car so they can sell it and earn a profit. You can also take apart the car and sell different parts that are still in good condition.
